Carney-Trump call ties Iran war to energy and trade at a sensitive moment for Canada

The Iran war has moved into the core of political coordination between Ottawa and Washington after the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Mark Carney spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump about developments in the Middle East, along with the economy and trade relations between the two countries, with both sides agreeing to remain in close contact.

The call carries added weight because it came as global oil prices jumped sharply in response to the war. Brent crude climbed as high as $119.50 a barrel during Monday trading before easing, as fears grew over supply disruption and shipping risks in the region. That timing turns the conversation into more than a routine diplomatic exchange, linking foreign policy directly to energy, trade and cost-of-living pressure that could reach Canada quickly.

The moment leaves Carney’s government balancing two tracks at once: managing the political and security fallout of the Middle East escalation while preserving a working channel with Washington at a time when the economic effects could spill into markets, supply chains and household costs in Canada.
