Chinese automaker Seres, the company behind AITO electric vehicles, has secured a patent for an unusual in-car feature: a hidden toilet built beneath a vehicle seat. The patent reflects the increasingly unconventional race among Chinese automakers to stand out in a crowded and highly competitive market. Reports say the toilet is concealed under a sliding seat mechanism and can be pulled out when needed, then tucked away after use.
According to published details, the system can be accessed manually and also activated through a voice command. The concept is designed to address urgent sanitation needs during long-distance travel, camping, or heavy traffic jams, when access to rest stops may be limited.
Coverage of the patent says the design also includes odor-control features, including a fan and an exhaust outlet, along with a waste tank that would require periodic emptying. Some reports added that a heating mechanism is intended to help reduce moisture and bacterial growth.
The patent carries the publication number CN224104011U. It was filed on April 22, 2025 and approved on April 10, 2026. However, Seres has not announced any production vehicle equipped with the system, and it remains unclear whether the idea will move beyond the patent stage.
This development highlights how competition in China’s smart EV sector is expanding beyond batteries and autonomous features to include increasingly bold ideas around cabin comfort and user convenience.
