Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal are heading into New Year’s Day on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026 with widespread closures or reduced hours across many public-facing services, while essential operations continue and transit agencies move to holiday schedules, adding New Year’s Eve measures to support safer travel after celebrations.
Typical statutory-day impacts include closures at many federal and provincial offices and limited access to administrative services, while hours for pharmacies and smaller retailers vary by location. In Ottawa, several city services adjust for the holiday and the Ottawa Public Library is closed on Jan. 1, while transit runs on holiday timetables with New Year’s Eve measures including free travel after evening hours and extended rail service before switching to a Sunday schedule on the 1st of Jan.
In Toronto, multiple city-run services close or operate with reduced hours on Jan. 1, waste collection shifts with a one-day delay in many areas, and transit follows holiday schedules with a free-ride window overnight on Dec. 31 across the TTC, GO Transit and UP Express.
In Montreal, many public services close on Jan. 1 while essential services continue on local hours, and transit is expanded overnight: the STM extends métro service on Dec. 31 until 3 a.m. on the Green, Orange and Yellow lines while the Blue Line runs regular service, several downtown bus routes operate throughout the night, and the REM runs continuously from New Year’s Eve through the morning of Jan. 1 to help riders get home safely.
