India’s Dr Reddy’s Laboratories says it is aiming to launch a generic version of semaglutide used for obesity treatment, pricing it about 50% to 60% below the branded product to expand access in a highly price-sensitive market.

Reuters quoted co-chairman G V Prasad speaking at the BioAsia conference in Hyderabad, noting Wegovy’s monthly cost in India ranges from about 10,850 to 16,400 rupees depending on dose.

The push comes as semaglutide’s patent protection is expected to open the door for generics in March 2026. Reuters has also reported Dr Reddy’s received Indian regulatory approval earlier this year to make a generic version of Ozempic, and the company is targeting first-year sales of 12 million injectable semaglutide pens.

Competition is intensifying, with Reuters reporting Sun Pharma has also secured regulatory clearance for generic semaglutide. Analysts see the global obesity-drug market potentially reaching about $150 billion a year by 2030, adding to price pressure on branded makers.
