EasyJet Flight from Egypt Diverted Over Power Bank Scare

An easyJet flight from Hurghada, Egypt, to London Luton was diverted to Rome after crew were told that a power bank was charging inside a passenger’s checked luggage.

The airline said flight EZY2618 was diverted to Rome Fiumicino as a precaution and in line with safety regulations after the crew became aware of the device in the luggage hold.

Reports said the change of route caused concern among passengers before the reason for the diversion became clear. The aircraft landed safely, and passengers disembarked normally. easyJet said hotel accommodation and meals were provided where available, while refreshments were given to some passengers who remained at the airport.

The incident highlights an important rule for travellers: power banks and spare lithium batteries should not be packed in checked luggage. easyJet says power banks must be carried in hand baggage only, and IATA guidance says lithium-powered devices and spare batteries must be carried in hand baggage.

The safety concern is that lithium batteries can overheat or catch fire. If that happens in the cabin, crew can detect and respond quickly. If it happens in the cargo hold, the risk is harder to identify and manage.

For travellers, the message is simple: before checking in a suitcase, remove power banks, spare batteries and similar lithium-powered items, and keep them in carry-on baggage according to airline rules.
