Global aviation turmoil deepens as airlines cut flights and raise fees

The global aviation sector is entering a period of severe disruption as soaring jet fuel prices push major airlines to trim schedules, raise fees and seek temporary relief ahead of what could become a more expensive and less stable summer travel season. Reuters reports this week show that the fuel shock is no longer a contained cost issue, but a growing threat to airline pricing, profitability and operational planning across key markets.
In Europe, concerns have intensified that jet fuel shortages could begin affecting passenger travel in the coming weeks. The International Air Transport Association has warned that cancellations could start from late May if supply problems persist. The European Union is also considering stronger measures to protect jet fuel availability and oversee distribution, as Europe remains heavily dependent on imports from the Middle East.
Airlines have already begun acting. KLM has cancelled European flights, Air Canada has reduced part of its New York schedule, Air Transat has trimmed planned capacity, and Lufthansa Group has removed thousands of short haul flights through October. In the United States, United Airlines said fares may need to rise by 15% to 20% to absorb the fuel shock, after already introducing several fares increases and higher baggage fees.
At the same time, low-cost carriers in the United States are pressing for temporary tax relief, arguing that without short term support, passengers will end up paying more through fares and add on charges. That shift shows how the crisis is widening from a fuel cost problem into a broader pressure point for governments, airlines and travelers alike.
If fuel volatility continues, the industry could face a fragile summer marked by higher prices, fewer options and more unstable scheduling across international markets.
