Hamilton police are searching for an 18-year-old who escaped custody early Thursday morning after officers arrested him during an investigation in central Hamilton. Police say Sultan Aldarwish was still handcuffed when he fled, triggering a wider search effort in the area.

Local reports, citing police, say Aldarwish was arrested at about 1 a.m. near Main Street East and Grant Avenue on an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with a release order linked to shoplifting offences. He was also under arrest on new fail to comply charges.

Police said his last confirmed location was in the area of Barton Street East and Leeming Street, where officers, including a K9 unit, continued searching. Investigators are asking residents to contact police immediately with any information on his whereabouts.

He is described as Middle Eastern, about 6 foot 1 and 168 pounds, with long black curly hair, a small goatee and a thin moustache. He was last seen wearing a black Moose Knuckle jacket, black shorts and black shoes.
