Police in Halton Region are warning residents after a concealed camera was found near a home in Milton, Ontario, raising concerns about a tactic that may be used to monitor houses before break-ins.
According to police, the device included a trail camera and a battery pack wrapped in camouflage tape and hidden in shrubs. It was pointed toward neighbouring homes and was discovered by a homeowner, who contacted police.
Investigators say this type of device may be used by people involved in residential break-ins to watch occupancy patterns and identify when homes are likely to be empty.
Police are urging residents to regularly inspect the areas around their homes, especially shrubs, fences, side yards, and other places where a small device could be hidden.
Residents who find a suspicious device are being told not to touch it. Police say they should call authorities so officers can safely collect it and preserve any possible evidence.
The warning comes as warmer weather begins in Ontario, a time when police expect residential break-ins may increase. Residents are also being asked to report suspicious people or vehicles in their neighbourhoods.
