Hormuz shipping nears a standstill as U.S.-Iran tensions jolt oil and global trade

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz slowed to an almost complete halt on Monday, April 20, 2026, with maritime data showing only three crossings in 12 hours, far below the normal daily flow of about 130 vessels. The disruption followed a sharp escalation between the United States and Iran, including warning shots at ships and the U.S. seizure of an Iranian cargo vessel over the weekend.
The fallout quickly hit global markets. War-risk insurance climbed to around 3 percent of vessel value, while oil prices jumped by more than 5 percent, underscoring the economic weight of any disruption in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
