Iraq and Syria reopen Rabia crossing for the first time in more than a decade

Iraq and Syria reopened the Rabia-Yarubiyah border crossing on Monday for the first time in more than a decade, marking a significant logistical and economic move after years of closure since the Syrian war began in 2011. Officials presented the reopening as a step toward reviving trade and transit between the two countries.
The development also carries strategic weight as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz disrupt regional calculations. Syrian officials described the crossing as an overland route that could support oil transport and commerce, even as experts caution that land transport cannot match the scale of pipelines or tanker shipping. Iraq depends on oil for roughly 90 percent of state revenue.
