Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced updated 2026 Express Entry categories, saying the changes are designed to attract and retain “top talent” and address critical labour gaps through targeted rounds of invitations.
Under category-based selection, IRCC identifies candidates in the Express Entry pool who meet a specific category (such as language ability or work experience in an occupation), ranks them by CRS score, and invites the top-ranked candidates in that category to apply for permanent residence.
IRCC said 2026 will include new categories, alongside continuing ones, including a category for foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience, new categories for researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport occupations, and a new category for skilled military recruits tied to Canadian Armed Forces recruitment in key roles.
2026 categories (as listed under current categories):
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare and social services occupations
- STEM occupations
- Trade occupations
- Education occupations
- Transport occupations
- Physicians with Canadian work experience
- Senior managers with Canadian work experience
- Researchers with Canadian work experience
- Skilled military recruits
IRCC also noted that the first round for foreign medical doctors with Canadian work experience is expected “in the coming days,” while Canadian Experience Class and French-proficiency draws continued into early 2026 to prioritize candidates already contributing to Canada’s economy and support Francophone vitality.
