Italy summons Russian ambassador after media insults targeting Meloni

Italy summoned the Russian ambassador in Rome to the Foreign Ministry in protest over comments the government described as extremely serious and offensive, made against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni by Russian television host Vladimir Solovyov on a pro Kremlin broadcast. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Italy had lodged a formal protest over the remarks.

The move came after Solovyov used offensive language against Meloni during a short television segment, then followed it with sharp political accusations, prompting Rome to treat the episode as more than routine media rhetoric.

The diplomatic reaction also comes as Meloni’s government continues to back Ukraine politically and militarily since Russia’s invasion, even though Italy’s ruling coalition includes forces that were once seen as more open to ties with Moscow.

Italy’s response shows how sensitive European governments have become to Russian media attacks when they move beyond political criticism and into direct insults against national leaders. That is an inference based on Rome’s decision to issue a formal diplomatic summons.
