Egypt has appointed Ambassador Khaled Mahmoud Abdel Moneim Azmy as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Canada, as part of the latest Egyptian diplomatic reshuffle. The appointment was published among a wider list of changes affecting Egypt’s diplomatic missions abroad and at the Foreign Ministry headquarters.

The appointment opens a new chapter for Egyptian diplomacy in Canada, where bilateral relations are supported not only by official political and economic ties, but also by a large and active Egyptian community across Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and other Canadian cities.

Ambassador Azmy brings with him a significant diplomatic background. According to Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he served as Assistant Foreign Minister for American Affairs, a position directly connected to Egypt’s relations with countries across the Americas, including Canada.

His career has also included work on sensitive regional and international files. He previously served as Egypt’s ambassador to Israel, one of the most delicate diplomatic postings in the region, and had earlier held the position of Director of the Counter-Terrorism Unit at Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This combination of experience gives his appointment in Ottawa particular significance. Canada is an important partner for Egypt in areas such as education, immigration, investment, cultural exchange and community engagement. At the same time, the Egyptian community in Canada remains a vital bridge between both countries and an important part of Egypt’s presence abroad.
