Laval Mayor Scales Back Public Duties After Meningioma Diagnosis

Laval Mayor Stéphane Boyer says he will reduce his public activities this fall after being diagnosed with a meningioma, while continuing to carry out his responsibilities as mayor and attend working meetings as he awaits further medical assessment.

Boyer said the diagnosis followed several months of headaches and vision problems, which led him to undergo a brain MRI. The scan revealed a meningioma, and he is now waiting to meet with a neurosurgeon to determine the next steps in his care.

He said he currently feels well and has the energy to continue working, but has chosen to scale back public appearances in the coming months to focus more closely on his health.

A meningioma develops in the meninges, the membranes surrounding and protecting the brain, rather than in the brain tissue itself. Symptoms can vary depending on the tumour’s size and location and on whether it places pressure on nearby tissue or nerves. Boyer has not announced a specific treatment plan and is still awaiting specialist evaluation.

Boyer has served as mayor of Laval since 2021, when he was elected at age 33 and became the youngest mayor in the city’s history. He later won a second term in the 2025 municipal election.
