Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said the country’s parliamentary elections “must be held on time,” pushing back against calls for postponement amid ongoing political and security tensions.
According to Reuters, citing Lebanon’s state news agency, Berri stressed that extending the current parliament’s mandate would not be justified, describing the elections as a fundamental constitutional entitlement and a necessary step to renew political legitimacy.
The remarks come as some political factions have raised concerns over holding the vote under current security conditions, particularly amid heightened tensions in southern Lebanon. The debate has revived broader disputes over electoral logistics and diaspora voting arrangements.
In what observers see as a practical signal of commitment to the timeline, Berri reportedly opened the nomination process and submitted his own candidacy for the Tyre–Zahrani district.
The issue underscores Lebanon’s recurring political divisions, where electoral timing often becomes intertwined with broader security and institutional challenges.
