Liberal Sweep Strengthens Carney’s Majority in Canada’s Parliament

Canada’s Liberal Party swept all three federal by-elections held on Monday, August 31, 2026, retaining seats in Ontario and British Columbia while capturing a Conservative-held riding in Quebec, strengthening Prime Minister Mark Carney’s narrow majority in the House of Commons.
In Toronto’s Beaches–East York, Liberal candidate Tanveer Shahnawaz won about 55.7% of the vote, finishing ahead of NDP candidate Shannon Devine and Conservative candidate Jim Syrbos, according to preliminary election results.
The Liberals also retained North Vancouver–Capilano in British Columbia, while the most significant result came in Quebec’s Chicoutimi–Le Fjord, where the party captured a seat that had been held by the Conservatives since 2018.
The Quebec victory carries particular political weight because it represents a direct seat gain from the Conservatives rather than simply the defence of an existing Liberal riding, giving Carney’s government additional breathing room in the House of Commons.
The by-elections were held as Carney’s government faces growing economic and trade pressures, particularly in its relationship with the United States, making the three contests an early test of the Liberals’ ability to maintain electoral momentum.
