Major Gulf Escalation: IRGC says Strait of Hormuz is closed and claims ships were turned back

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz was “fully closed” and claimed they had turned back ships attempting to pass, marking a fresh escalation around one of the world’s most critical oil and trade routes. Editorially, this should be handled as an Iranian claim attributed to the IRGC, not as a fully settled independent fact, because the shipping situation remains fluid.

The announcement came as ship tracking data cited by Reuters showed two Chinese vessels attempted to leave the Gulf through Hormuz before turning back. Other reports also said additional ships were warned off by IRGC naval forces.

The development carries major global significance because any disruption in the strait can affect energy flows, freight costs, and wider international trade. Only days earlier, Iran had said the waterway remained open to all shipping except vessels linked to what it called enemy states, suggesting a clear hardening in its position.
