Marilyn Gladu joins Liberals, moving Carney one seat closer to a majority

Prime Minister Mark Carney moved one step closer to a parliamentary majority after Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu crossed the floor to join the governing Liberals, strengthening the government’s position in the House of Commons. Reuters reported that the Liberals now hold 171 seats in the 343-seat chamber, just one short of the 172 needed for a majority. Current House of Commons standings also show the Conservatives at 140 seats, with three vacancies.
The move matters because Carney has governed with a minority since the April 2025 election, meaning his government still depends on opposition support to pass major legislation. Reuters said Carney has argued that a majority would give him more room to respond to economic pressure and U.S. trade measures.
Gladu’s switch is part of a wider pattern of defections in Ottawa. Reuters reported that she is the fourth Conservative lawmaker to join the Liberals since November and the fifth opposition legislator overall after a recent move from the New Democratic Party. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the development, saying Carney was trying to secure a majority voters had not granted him.
With by-elections expected in vacant ridings in the coming days, the Liberals now appear closer than ever to reaching majority territory, leaving federal politics in Ottawa open to further shifts.
