New Abacus Poll: Liberals Hold National Edge as Canada’s Political Mood Stays Largely Stable

A new Abacus Data poll published today suggests the final days of March have brought continuity rather than upheaval to federal politics in Canada, with the Liberals still holding a clear national lead. Among committed voters, the Liberals stand at 44%, ahead of the Conservatives at 37%, while the NDP is at 9%, the Bloc Québécois at 6%, and the Greens at 3%. The survey was conducted from March 19 to 24 among 1,515 Canadian adults, and Abacus says a comparable probability sample of that size would carry a margin of error of plus or minus 2.51 percentage points.

Even though the Liberal lead is slightly narrower than earlier in March, the broader takeaway is stability. Abacus says the political opinion environment has largely stabilized, with federal government approval still solid at 54% versus 30% disapproval. Regionally, the Liberals continue to run strongly in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada, while the Conservatives remain dominant in Alberta and competitive in other parts of the country. Leader impressions also continue to favour Mark Carney over Pierre Poilievre.

The poll also shows that cost of living remains the top concern for Canadians at 64%, followed by Donald Trump and his administration at 42%, and the economy at 41%. On the country’s direction, 42% say Canada is headed in the right direction while 44% say it is on the wrong track. Taken together, the numbers point to a late-March snapshot of a political landscape that is still competitive, but not dramatically shifting.
