Ontario Job Posting Rule Changes Take Effect Jan. 1, 2026

Ontario’s new rules for publicly advertised job postings take effect on January 1, 2026, introducing new hiring disclosures aimed at improving transparency—particularly for youth and newcomers.

Under the changes, covered employers must include expected compensation or a compensation range in public job ads. Where a range is used, the gap between the minimum and maximum cannot exceed $50,000 per year, with an exemption for roles where expected compensation—or the top of the range—exceeds $200,000 annually.

Employers must also disclose whether AI is used to screen, assess, or select applicants, and state whether the posting is for an existing vacancy.

The rules further prohibit requiring “Canadian experience” in the job posting or any associated application form. After interviews, employers must inform interviewed candidates within 45 days of the final interview whether a hiring decision has been made.

Employers are also required to retain copies of public job postings and related application forms for three years after the posting is removed from public access, and keep records of post-interview notifications for the same period.
