Ottawa closed recreation and culture facilities until noon on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, as a prolonged freezing rain event threatened hazardous travel conditions, possible power outages and wider disruption across the city.

Officials warned that freezing rain could last for many hours and in some areas reach close to 24 hours, with ice accretion of 10 to 20 mm expected in Ottawa. That level of accumulation raises the risk of falling branches, damaged power lines and difficult road conditions during the morning commute.

The city also declared a significant weather event, saying road and maintenance crews would remain active but that returning conditions to normal could take longer than usual because of the storm.

Residents were urged to check official updates before heading out Wednesday morning. Local coverage also warned that ice buildup on trees and power lines could lead to broader outages and debris on roads, adding pressure to transportation and public services across the capital.

As of Tuesday evening, no winter parking ban had been imposed, though officials left open the possibility of further measures depending on how conditions evolve.
