Workers in Quebec are seeing a new minimum wage take effect today, Friday, May 1, 2026, as the province’s general minimum wage rises from $16.10 to $16.60 an hour.
The increase matters to thousands of workers in Montreal and across the province, especially students, part-time employees, newcomers, and people working in services, retail, restaurants and seasonal jobs.
Under the new rules, employers covered by Quebec labour standards cannot pay less than $16.60 an hour for jobs subject to the general minimum wage. For employees who receive tips, including some restaurant and hospitality workers, the minimum wage has increased to $13.30 an hour.
CNESST also states that workers paid by commission or by piece work must still receive at least the minimum wage for their work. Overtime in Quebec is generally calculated based on a 40-hour workweek.
While the increase gives some workers a modest boost, the broader affordability debate continues. A CityNews Montreal report noted that the living income for a single person in Montreal is now just over $41,500 after taxes, leaving minimum-wage earnings well below what some studies consider enough to live comfortably in the city.
For workers, the practical step is to check the first pay stub after May 1 and confirm that the hourly rate and total hours reflect the new minimum wage. If there is a problem, workers can first raise it with their employer and then contact CNESST if the issue is not corrected.
The increase is an important service story for low-income households, students and newcomers because it directly affects daily earnings at a time when rent, food and transportation costs remain high in Montreal and other Quebec communities.
