From the Ambassador Bridge to Gordie Howe: Reports link Moroun meeting to Trump threat

Tensions over the Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Detroit and Windsor have resurfaced after the White House said President Donald Trump views Canada’s control over what crosses the bridge, and related land ownership issues, as unacceptable.
The comments followed a phone call between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said the dispute will be resolved and stressed the bridge will operate under joint ownership between the Government of Canada and the State of Michigan, even though Canada financed the project.
Separately, media reports said Trump’s threat to block the new bridge’s opening came after U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick met with Matthew Moroun, whose family owns the rival Ambassador Bridge, and Lutnick then contacted Trump before the threat was issued.
Reporting on Trump’s social media post said he demanded compensation, immediate talks, and suggested the United States should receive an ownership stake in the asset, reigniting trade and border politics around one of North America’s busiest crossings.
The new bridge is expected to ease congestion at existing crossings, and U.S. Homeland Security has formally designated it as an official port of entry ahead of operations.
