Saudi Arabia Escalates Against Tehran, Orders Five Iranian Diplomats to Leave Within 24 Hours

Saudi Arabia has sharply escalated its diplomatic confrontation with Iran, ordering Iran’s military attaché, his assistant and three other mission staff to leave the kingdom within 24 hours, in a move that signals the regional crisis is no longer confined to military and security tensions alone. It has now spilled directly into formal state-to-state relations between Riyadh and Tehran.

Riyadh said the decision was tied to what it described as continued Iranian attacks on Saudi territory, warning that further escalation would carry serious consequences for bilateral relations. The measure comes at a highly sensitive regional moment and marks one of the most serious diplomatic ruptures since Saudi Arabia and Iran restored ties in 2023.

The Saudi move is being read as more than a procedural expulsion. It is a direct political message that attacks on the kingdom’s sovereignty, economic interests and strategic security will not be met with silence, even if the first response comes through diplomatic channels. With the wider regional war already disrupting energy and security calculations across the Gulf, the decision adds another layer of pressure to an already volatile crisis.
