Serious Escalation Over the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz crisis entered a dangerous new phase on Sunday, March 22, 2026, after the United States and Iran exchanged direct threats that raised fears of a wider conflict involving energy facilities and critical infrastructure across the Gulf.

According to Reuters, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iranian power plants could be struck if Tehran failed to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Iran responded by warning that U.S. infrastructure, including Gulf energy facilities, could become targets if such strikes were carried out. Iran’s parliament speaker also said key infrastructure and energy sites in the Middle East could face “irreversible destruction” if Iranian power plants were attacked.

The escalation carries global significance because roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies move through the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters also reported that the latest tensions added to market anxiety and reinforced expectations of further pressure on oil prices and shipping flows.

Iran has meanwhile said the waterway remains open to shipping except for vessels linked to what it calls its enemies, underscoring how the strait is being used as a central pressure point in the current confrontation.
