Rainfall Could Approach 100 mm as Storm Warnings Affect Ontario and Quebec

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued weather alerts for several areas of Ontario and Quebec on Sunday, August 2, 2026, as rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms raised concerns about localized flooding, hazardous driving conditions and sharply reduced visibility.
Rainfall warnings covered Ottawa, Kanata, Orléans, Richmond, Metcalfe, Smiths Falls and other parts of eastern Ontario. Total rainfall amounts of 50 to 80 millimetres were expected, while communities affected by repeated waves of thunderstorms could receive amounts approaching 100 millimetres. Rain was expected to continue through Sunday night and could linger into Monday morning across eastern Ontario.
Heavy-rain warnings also remained in effect for parts of southwestern Ontario and the Niagara Region, where local totals of 50 to 80 millimetres were possible before conditions gradually improved Sunday evening. In parts of the Greater Toronto Area, rainfall totals varied considerably, with localized amounts of up to approximately 50 millimetres possible.
In Quebec, Gatineau was included in a rainfall warning as the National Capital Region experienced similar conditions. Environment Canada had also placed Greater Montreal and Laval under a severe thunderstorm watch earlier Sunday. Those watches were lifted during the evening, but the forecast continued to indicate a risk of severe thunderstorms early in the evening and further showers or thunderstorms overnight.
Officials warned that water could accumulate on roads and in low-lying areas, with possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. Visibility could deteriorate rapidly during torrential downpours, and motorists were urged not to drive through flooded roadways.
Residents were also advised to secure loose outdoor objects, stay away from trees and power lines, and move indoors as soon as thunder is heard. Weather alerts may be updated or cancelled quickly as individual storms develop and move across the region.
