Rearview Camera Issue Puts Thousands of Teslas Under Recall in Canada

Transport Canada has issued a recall for 13,846 Tesla vehicles in Canada because of a software problem that could delay the rearview camera image when the vehicle is shifted into reverse shortly after startup.
The Canadian recall affects Tesla Model Y vehicles from 2020 to 2023, Model 3 vehicles from 2021 to 2023, Model S vehicles from 2021 to 2023, and Model X vehicles from 2022 to 2023, according to Transport Canada’s motor vehicle safety recall database.
Transport Canada says Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display within two seconds of shifting into reverse. If the image is delayed, the driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle may be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall does not necessarily require owners to visit a service centre. Tesla has released an over-the-air software update to fix the problem, and no further action is required if the vehicle has software release 2026.8.6.1 or a later version.
Tesla says the problem can cause a loss of rearview camera image for up to 11 seconds when some drivers shift into reverse shortly after the vehicle powers up. The company says it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or deaths related to the condition.
Tesla will notify affected owners by email. Owners can also check whether their vehicle is affected by using a VIN recall search tool or by confirming the software version in the vehicle or Tesla app.
For drivers, the issue matters because rearview cameras are a key safety feature in modern vehicles, especially when backing out of driveways, parking lots, garages, or crowded areas.
