Ticketmaster Removes Ontario Resale Tickets Ahead of Price Cap

Ticketmaster Canada has started removing resale tickets listed for events in Ontario as the province moves toward new rules designed to stop tickets from being resold above their original price.

The change follows the passage of Ontario’s budget bill, which includes amendments aimed at limiting prices in the secondary ticket market for concerts, sports games, cultural events and other live performances.

The company said affected tickets will be able to be relisted next week after its resale marketplace is updated to comply with the new rules. Ticketmaster has also been notifying customers about the change.

Under the proposed amendments, a ticket listed on the secondary market cannot be offered for more than the total price originally paid to the primary seller, with applicable fees, service charges and taxes handled under the law’s rules.

For consumers, this means a ticket bought for an Ontario concert or game should no longer be relisted at a sharply inflated price on official resale platforms. The change follows years of complaints from fans who have seen tickets to major events appear online at several times their original cost.

The move is especially important ahead of the busy summer season for concerts and sports events. It could give fans and families more protection against price gouging and make it easier to understand what they are actually paying for.

The change does not end ticket resale. Instead, it changes how resale listings are handled and may require clearer proof of the original ticket price and more transparent disclosure of fees.

Consumers in Ontario should still be careful in the coming days. They should check the original ticket price where possible, review all fees before paying and avoid buying from unverified sellers on social media, where the risk of fraud can be higher.
