Health Warning for Toronto Fans: Heat and Alcohol Could Turn Matchday Fun Into Risk

Toronto health officials are warning fans attending today’s Portugal-Croatia World Cup match to take the heat seriously, as hot and humid conditions could make temperatures feel close to 40°C.

According to Reuters, Toronto’s medical officer of health, Dr. Michelle Murti, urged fans to drink water throughout the day and not wait until they feel thirsty. The warning comes as large crowds are expected around the stadium and public viewing areas, where long periods outdoors, walking, standing, and cheering can increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.

Health officials also advised fans to limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol can worsen dehydration, especially during extreme heat, and may make it harder for people to recognize early signs of heat exhaustion.

The match, part of the Round of 32, comes as Environment Canada continues to warn of hot conditions in the Toronto area, with high humidity adding to the health risk. Authorities are also monitoring the possibility of thunderstorms, which could affect outdoor fan gatherings and public viewing events.

The City of Toronto has activated heat-response measures, including cooling options and public spaces where people can get relief from the weather. Fans are advised to carry water, wear light clothing, use sunscreen, wear a hat, and look for shade whenever possible.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion can include dizziness, headache, nausea, heavy sweating, weakness, confusion, or feeling faint. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should move to a cooler place, drink water, and seek medical help if symptoms worsen.

The message for fans is simple: enjoy the match, but do not underestimate the heat. For anyone heading to Toronto’s Portugal-Croatia game today, water, shade, and caution around alcohol may be just as important as tickets, flags, and team colours.
