Toronto police are searching for a Montreal man after a shooting inside Fairview Mall in North York on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in what investigators say began as a jewellery store robbery and ended with a mall security guard being shot while confronting the suspect. Police said officers responded at 10:05 a.m. to the area of Sheppard Avenue East and Don Mills Road.
Police identified the wanted suspect as Kyle Douglas Prouse, 53, of Montreal, adding that he also has ties to Toronto and Vancouver. According to investigators, he entered a jewellery store, stole merchandise and was confronted by a member of the mall security team, who was then shot during the encounter. The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries, and CityNews later reported that his condition had stabilized after he was initially transported in life-threatening condition.
Investigators said the suspect fled first in a white van heading south on Don Mills Road. The van was later recovered near Shaughnessy Boulevard and George Henry Boulevard, after which the suspect allegedly escaped in a black Honda Accord. Police also said Prouse is wanted in connection with an August 2023 break-and-enter investigation in Durham Region.
The case adds to security concerns around violent retail crime in Toronto, particularly given that the shooting happened inside a major shopping centre shortly after opening. As of the morning of Wednesday, April 22, 2026, police were still asking the public for help locating the suspect.
