U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, accompanied by a high-profile delegation of American business leaders that includes Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, ahead of a two-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump was welcomed at Beijing Capital International Airport with formal ceremony, including an honor guard and students waving U.S. and Chinese flags. Reuters described the visit as the first by a U.S. president to China in nearly a decade.
The summit is expected to focus on trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan, fentanyl, and the ongoing war with Iran. Trump is seeking economic gains from the visit while trying to preserve a fragile trade truce with Beijing.
The presence of Musk, Huang, and other senior executives gives the trip a strong business and technology dimension. Washington wants greater access for U.S. companies in China, while Beijing is seeking relief from U.S. restrictions on advanced semiconductors and chipmaking equipment.
Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues on the agenda, with China expected to press Washington over U.S. arms sales to the island. At the same time, both sides appear interested in preventing economic tensions from escalating into a deeper rupture between the world’s two largest economies.
