Trump asks Supreme Court to lift block on ending Syria TPS protections

The U.S. Supreme Court set a March 5 deadline for challengers to respond after the Trump administration filed an emergency request aimed at clearing the way to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians while litigation continues, Reuters reported.
According to Reuters, the Justice Department is asking the court to pause a November injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla in Manhattan, after the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined on Feb. 17 to halt that injunction.
Reuters said the dispute affects about 6,000 Syrians. TPS is a humanitarian designation that provides temporary protection from deportation and work authorization for eligible nationals of countries experiencing war, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. Syria was first designated in 2012.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced in September 2025 that Syria’s designation would end, arguing conditions no longer meet the statutory threshold, Reuters reported.
