Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 1967, said the overall situation across the Palestinian territories is “catastrophic” and that the humanitarian conditions in Gaza are “even bleaker,” during a briefing linked to the UN human rights office (OHCHR).

She described families in Gaza living in flood-soaked tents and people dying from hunger and preventable diseases, arguing that realities on the ground contradict narratives portraying the moment as a stable ceasefire.

Albanese also warned that conditions in the West Bank are deteriorating, and pointed to policies she says are aimed at entrenching unlawful annexation and driving forced displacement and lasting demographic change.

Her remarks come amid sustained political pressure and criticism over her stance on Gaza. The UN has repeatedly stressed that Special Rapporteurs are independent experts, and voiced concern about mounting harassment and misinformation campaigns targeting mandate-holders.

Israel rejects broad allegations about its conduct during the war and disputes claims raised in UN-linked reporting.
