Unions representing federal public servants say nearly 10,000 workers received notices over the past week warning that their jobs may be affected by upcoming cuts, in what they describe as the largest wave of workforce adjustment notices in recent months.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) said more than 5,000 of its members received workforce adjustment notices this week, including staff at Global Affairs Canada, Transport Canada, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, and Health Canada, with notices also issued across other departments.
The Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) said roughly 2,550 of its members received notices this week, including employees at Employment and Social Development Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) said more than 2,700 of its members also received notices.
Workforce adjustment notices signal that positions may be impacted by restructuring or reductions, but they do not automatically mean immediate layoffs. It remains unclear how many workers who received notices will ultimately lose their jobs.
The developments come as Ottawa continues a multi-year spending review aimed at reducing program and administrative costs, with the government pointing to restructuring and attrition as tools to bring the size of the federal public service down from its recent peak
