U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said U.S. forces have completed a 23-day mission to transfer more than 5,700 Islamic State (ISIS) detainees from detention sites in northeastern Syria into Iraqi custody.
CENTCOM said the operation began on Jan. 21 and was carried out with the cooperation of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), describing the move as aimed at keeping detainees in more secure facilities and reducing the risk of an ISIS resurgence.
The Associated Press reported the transferred detainees are adult males from 60 nationalities and were moved at Baghdad’s request to await legal proceedings in Iraq.
