WhatsApp launches parent-managed accounts for children under 13

WhatsApp has introduced a new account type for children under 13, allowing younger users to access the platform under direct parental or guardian supervision in a move aimed at making family communication safer.
Under the new system, children will not receive the full standard app experience. Instead, these managed accounts are limited mainly to messaging and calling, while features such as Channels, Status, and Meta AI remain unavailable at this stage.
The feature gives parents broader control over who can contact their child, how new message requests are handled, and whether group invitations can be accepted. The safety settings are protected through a parent PIN, making it harder for the child to alter core protections without approval.
WhatsApp also said personal chats and calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, even with the added layer of parental oversight.
The launch comes as digital platforms face growing pressure to strengthen child safety measures, especially as governments and regulators push for tighter safeguards around minors’ access to online services.
The company said the rollout will begin gradually in selected markets over the coming months rather than appearing worldwide at once.
