Four Times the Usual Fare: Boston World Cup 2026 Train Prices Shock Fans

Transportation costs have emerged as an early flashpoint ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston, after the special match-day round-trip train fare to Foxborough was set at $80. Local reports say that price is about four times the usual cost of special event rail service to Gillette Stadium, turning what should have been a routine logistics detail into a wider debate about how expensive the fan experience is becoming.

The issue matters because Boston is due to host seven World Cup matches, including a quarter-final, as part of the expanded 48-team tournament that will feature 104 matches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Boston’s first match is scheduled for June 13, 2026, placing transport access and affordability high on the list of concerns as the city prepares for global crowds.

Even so, strong demand has continued. Local coverage reported that more than 17,000 round-trip tickets were sold on the first day alone, with nearly 11,000 purchased within the first hour. That response suggests many fans are willing, or forced, to absorb the higher cost despite frustration, especially given the limited practical alternatives for reaching the stadium on match days.

The dispute is an early sign of a broader concern surrounding the tournament: while host cities are counting on the World Cup’s excitement and economic upside, ordinary supporters are increasingly confronting the rising price of simply being there.
