Canada’s Parliamentary Budget Officer estimates that government support for hosting the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup will reach C$1.066 billion, raising fresh questions about the public cost of the tournament before it begins. The estimate includes federal support, as well as provincial and municipal spending tied to the Canadian host cities of Toronto and Vancouver.

Canada will host 13 matches during the tournament, which it is co-hosting with the United States and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Seven matches will be played in Vancouver and six in Toronto, bringing the estimated cost to about C$82 million per game.

Of the total C$1.066 billion cost, the federal government is expected to cover C$473 million, while other levels of government will provide C$593 million. As of April 2026, Toronto planned to spend C$380 million on hosting costs, while British Columbia had budgeted C$578 million for Vancouver’s share of the tournament.

Security is a major part of the federal support, with up to C$145 million set aside for tournament-related security costs, including C$100 million for British Columbia and C$45 million for Toronto.

The report shifts the discussion from the excitement of hosting a global sporting event to a practical question about public spending, who pays for it, and whether the expected tourism and economic benefits will justify the cost.
