Algeria’s World Cup campaign came to an end after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32 at BC Place in Vancouver, as the Swiss side advanced to the Round of 16 with a controlled and disciplined performance. Reuters reported that Breel Embolo opened the scoring early, before Dan Ndoye added the second goal shortly after halftime.
The result ended Algeria’s hopes of extending its run in the tournament, in a match where Switzerland showed greater efficiency in the decisive moments. Embolo’s early goal gave the Swiss control of the rhythm, while Ndoye’s second goal at the start of the second half left Algeria chasing a difficult comeback.
Switzerland’s victory was not only important for this tournament, but also historic. According to Reuters and The Analyst, it marked Switzerland’s first knockout-stage win at a World Cup since 1938, ending a long wait and sending Murat Yakin’s team into the next round with growing confidence.
For Algeria, the defeat was shaped by costly details: difficulty containing Swiss transitions, limited attacking clarity in the final third, and an inability to turn possession or pressure into goals. Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic said his team had been heavily punished for its mistakes, after Switzerland scored from a quick counterattack and then struck again immediately after the break.
Johan Manzambi was one of the key figures in Switzerland’s win. Reuters reported that the young midfielder played a central role in the performance, creating the opening goal for Embolo and giving Switzerland energy and balance in midfield.
Despite the disappointment, Algeria’s presence in the knockout stage remains an important sign of progress. The team reached a difficult phase of an expanded and highly competitive World Cup, but the match against Switzerland exposed the need for sharper decision-making, stronger defensive reactions and more clinical attacking play in major elimination games.
Switzerland, meanwhile, continued its unbeaten World Cup run and will now face either Colombia or Ghana in the Round of 16, according to Reuters via Al Jazeera.
