Axios: U.S. and Israel weigh special forces option to secure Iran uranium stockpile

Axios reported that U.S. and Israeli officials have discussed a potential special forces mission inside Iran at a later stage of the conflict to secure a stockpile of highly enriched uranium, as part of the stated goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

According to the report, the talks have centered on two broad pathways: moving the material out of Iran, or addressing it on site by bringing in nuclear specialists to reduce enrichment levels. Axios noted major operational uncertainties, including the material’s location, access to heavily fortified underground facilities, and whether any operation would be U.S.-led, Israeli-led, or joint.

Axios also referenced recent remarks by senior U.S. officials indicating that physically securing the material, if pursued, would require boots on the ground to retrieve it, while leaving open the possibility of ground forces if there were a compelling reason. No official decision, timeline, or operational plan has been publicly confirmed.

The discussions come as visibility into Iran’s stockpiles remains contested. Reuters has cited an IAEA estimate that Iran previously held roughly 441 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60% prior to earlier strikes.
