With film submissions now closed, organizers of the Calgary Arab Film Festival are preparing for the event’s 15th edition, scheduled to take place at Globe Cinema from December 4 to 6, 2026.

The three-day festival, presented by the Calgary Arab Arts & Culture Society, aims to introduce Canadian audiences to films that explore Arab cultures, identities and lived experiences.

Originally established as Calgary Arab Film Nights, the festival has developed into an annual showcase for stories that challenge familiar portrayals of Arab communities.

According to its organizers, the event seeks to highlight the diversity of Arab societies, bringing attention to everyday experiences, relationships, humour and social issues that are often overlooked in mainstream representations of the region.

This year’s call for submissions invited filmmakers from Alberta, across Canada, the Arab world and beyond. Entries closed on September 30, while the festival’s FilmFreeway listing identifies October 30 as the date applicants are expected to receive selection notifications.

The festival accepts both feature-length and short films across several genres, including fiction, documentary, experimental cinema, animation and horror. Eligible works must be produced by Arab filmmakers or address Arab people or the Arab world. English subtitles are required for films in other languages.

The festival forms part of the Calgary Arab Arts & Culture Society’s wider cultural programming. The nonprofit organization promotes Arab artistic expression through film screenings, visual arts, literature, poetry, comedy and heritage-related events.

Through its activities, the society seeks to create opportunities for cultural exchange and encourage a broader understanding of Arab communities within Canadian society.
