Canada Reviews Some Citizenship-by-Descent Files After Approval

Canadian immigration authorities are reviewing some citizenship-by-descent files after approval, according to a CIC News report published on June 15, 2026. The report said Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada sent letters to some recent recipients of Canadian citizenship certificates, informing them that their citizenship claims were under review.

The move does not automatically mean citizenship has been revoked. In some cases, recipients of paper citizenship certificates were asked to return the certificate temporarily while the review takes place. Those affected may also be allowed to submit additional evidence to support their claim.

The letters refer to section 26 of Canada’s Citizenship Regulations, which allows the Registrar of Canadian Citizenship to request the surrender of a citizenship certificate if there is reason to believe the holder may not be entitled to it. The regulation also states that the certificate can be returned if entitlement is confirmed, or cancelled if the person is found not to be entitled.

The review appears to be connected in some cases to documentation concerns, including records that were not obtained directly from official source authorities, or files that lacked sufficient explanation for missing official documents. This makes strong official documentation especially important in citizenship-by-descent applications.

The development comes after Canada’s new citizenship rules took effect on December 15, 2025, expanding access to citizenship for some people born outside Canada in the second generation or later who had been affected by the previous first-generation limit.

IRCC’s official application guidance says applicants must include required documents and provide a letter of explanation for any missing or unavailable records. For applicants relying on family lineage, this means every generational link should be supported as clearly as possible.
