Canada confirms opposition to Israeli death penalty law targeting Palestinians

Canada has confirmed its opposition to Israel’s new death penalty law, saying its application would in practice target Palestinians in a discriminatory way. Global Affairs Canada said Ottawa is joining its partners in expressing concern over the legislation and reaffirmed its clear opposition to its use, while also stressing its commitment to human rights and the global movement toward abolishing capital punishment.

The Canadian position came after the Knesset passed a law that opens the door to imposing the death penalty in specific deadly attack cases involving Palestinians tried before military courts. The measure has triggered wide international and human rights criticism, with warnings that it undermines fair trial guarantees and entrenches legal discrimination against Palestinians.

International calls to repeal the law have continued to grow, with rights advocates and UN officials arguing that it conflicts with international legal obligations and heightens concern over the fate of Palestinian detainees and future defendants. Canada’s position adds political weight to that broader rejection at a time of rising scrutiny over the law’s human rights implications.
