Canada are preparing to face Morocco on Saturday, July 4, in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in one of the most meaningful fixtures for Arab communities in Canada. The match brings together the co-host nation and a strong Arab side with major international pedigree.
According to Canada Soccer’s official schedule, the match will be played at NRG Stadium in Houston at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time and will be broadcast on TSN, RDS and CTV.
Canada reached the Round of 16 after a dramatic 1-0 win over South Africa in the Round of 32. Team Canada described the result as part of a historic run, noting that this was Canada’s first knockout-stage match at a senior men’s FIFA World Cup.
Morocco secured their place after eliminating the Netherlands on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Sportsnet, citing the Associated Press, reported that Ismael Saibari scored the decisive penalty, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a key save to help send the Atlas Lions through.
For many Arab Canadians, the match carries meaning beyond the scoreline. It brings together support for Canada as a home nation and pride in Morocco as a leading Arab and African football force. It is also a reminder of Morocco’s historic 2022 run, when the team became the first African side to reach a World Cup semifinal.
Reuters reported that Canada coach Jesse Marsch has not yet decided whether captain Alphonso Davies will start against Morocco, after Davies returned to action in the win over South Africa. Marsch said Canada would keep its identity while making tactical adjustments for Morocco’s threats.
Saturday’s match is more than a Round of 16 fixture. For Tawasul News readers, it is a game where Canada’s World Cup dream meets Arab football pride — a moment that will be watched closely from Houston to homes, cafés and fan gatherings across Canada.
