One of the fiercest rivalries in international sport was renewed on the ice at the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games, as Canada and the United States reached the gold-medal game in Para ice hockey. Ahead of the final, the Canadian Paralympic Committee confirmed that Canada would face the U.S. for gold on Sunday, March 15, setting up yet another defining chapter in a long-running North American showdown.
Canada booked its place in the final with a 4-2 semifinal win over China, while the U.S. also advanced to the championship game to create the marquee matchup many expected. Canada also completed the preliminary round with a perfect 3-0 record, underlining the team’s strong form entering the medal round.
The final carried weight far beyond a single medal. The United States had won the previous four Paralympic gold medals in Para ice hockey before Milano Cortina 2026, while Canada’s last Paralympic title came in Torino in 2006. At the same time, Canada had shown it could beat its biggest rival by winning the 2024 world title over the Americans, adding even more edge to a matchup already defined by history, pride, and elite-level familiarity.
By Sunday, the anticipated clash had become reality. The United States defeated Canada 6-2 in the gold-medal game to claim a fifth straight Paralympic title, while Canada settled for silver for the third consecutive Games. The result once again confirmed that when Canada and the U.S. meet in Para ice hockey, the sport’s biggest stage often belongs to them.
