Canada and U.S. to Continue Trade Talks as USMCA Future Faces Key Test

Canada and the United States are set to continue trade discussions next week after Canadian minister Dominic LeBlanc held what was described as a long and constructive meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during the G7 summit in France.
The talks come ahead of the July 1, 2026 review point for the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, known as CUSMA in Canada and USMCA in the United States. Reuters reported that revisions are not expected to be fully negotiated by that date, which may instead begin a longer process if the three countries do not agree on a straightforward extension.
The Canadian government says CUSMA reinforces Canada’s strong economic ties with the United States and Mexico and forms one of the world’s largest free trade regions.
The issue is especially important for Canada because about 75% of Canadian exports go to the United States, making uncertainty around tariffs and the future of the agreement a major concern for businesses and workers.
