The Canadian government is set to announce a new investment in Toronto based Xanadu Quantum Technologies today, supporting an expansion of the company's research and development facilities and the development of advanced quantum manufacturing capacity in Canada.
Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Minister Evan Solomon, joined by MP James Maloney, is scheduled to announce the details in Toronto at 1 p.m. ET. The government has not yet disclosed the amount of the investment.
The planned funding goes beyond research alone. Ottawa says the investment will also support advanced manufacturing capacity in Canada, strengthening the country's domestic quantum technology supply chain.
Xanadu is a Toronto based photonic quantum computing company that is developing quantum computers using light particles, or photons. The company became publicly traded on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and Nasdaq in March 2026.
Earlier this year, Xanadu announced negotiations with the governments of Canada and Ontario for up to C$390 million in potential support for Project OPTIMISM, an initiative aimed at establishing semiconductor and photonic manufacturing capabilities in Canada. It has not yet been confirmed whether today's announcement represents the final agreement related to that funding or a separate portion of it.
The investment comes as Canada seeks to turn its longstanding strength in quantum research into commercially scalable technology and domestic manufacturing. Canada's National Quantum Strategy identifies quantum computing hardware and software, research, talent and commercialization as central priorities.
