Flight operations at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport remained suspended on Sunday, while schools across the capital moved to remote learning through Thursday after Saturday’s attack killed 12 people and injured 309, including several in critical condition.
Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said operations had been temporarily halted while damage was assessed and airport facilities underwent safety checks. It did not officially announce a reopening time, although flight-tracking data indicated the closure had been extended until 9 p.m. Sunday local time.
The dead included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshis and one national each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan. Authorities also confirmed material damage to airport facilities, with assessments continuing.
Parents in Riyadh were notified that in-person classes would be suspended from Sunday through Thursday, with students, teachers and administrative staff moving to remote learning.
The Saudi-led coalition blamed Yemen’s Houthis for the attack. On Sunday, the Houthis renewed warnings to airlines, travellers and airport workers to avoid Saudi airports and airspace, excluding airports in Mecca and Medina, and threatened further escalation if Saudi military operations in Yemen continued.
Saturday’s strike was the third attack on Riyadh airport in a week. Two earlier attacks had killed four people and badly damaged a Saudi commercial aircraft parked at the airport.
