Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Monday, March 16, 2026, for talks focused on the escalating crisis in the Middle East, as concerns grow over the impact on energy markets and the wider global economy. Canada’s Prime Minister’s Office said the two leaders also discussed continued support for Ukraine and ways to deepen economic and security cooperation between Canada and the United Kingdom.
Ottawa said Carney and Starmer condemned Iranian missile and drone attacks, including strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure, and expressed concern over the risk of broader regional escalation, the rising human toll, and the wider economic consequences of the conflict, including higher energy prices.
The economic dimension of the meeting was especially significant as disruption around the Strait of Hormuz continues to weigh on oil and fuel markets and revive inflation concerns. Starmer said Britain is working with allies on a plan to reopen the strait and stabilize markets, while his government announced a £53 million support package for households affected by rising heating-oil costs.
On bilateral ties, the two leaders reaffirmed the strength of the Canada-UK partnership and said they would continue working to deepen economic and security cooperation, including support for defence production, supply chains, and new financing tools such as the proposed Defence, Security and Resilience Bank. They also reiterated support for Ukraine and agreed to remain in close contact.
