Carney Moves to Cut Fuel Costs as Canadians Face Higher Living Expenses

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Tuesday that the federal government will temporarily suspend the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline and diesel across Canada, in a move aimed at easing pressure on households and businesses facing higher energy and transportation costs.
The measure will take effect on April 20, 2026, and remain in place until September 7, 2026, Labour Day. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the suspension is expected to reduce prices at the pump by about 10 cents per litre for regular gasoline and 4 cents per litre for diesel.
The government said the decision is not only intended to help drivers, but also to lower operating costs for truckers and businesses in key sectors including food, agriculture, housing, construction and delivery. Aviation fuels will also be included in the temporary suspension.
Carney framed the move as part of a broader affordability agenda, saying the government wants to give Canadians more certainty and reduce daily costs at a time of global energy instability.
The announcement comes as fuel prices remain a major concern for families and businesses, especially with the summer travel season approaching and transportation costs feeding into the price of many goods and services.
